AbstractWe performed white-light Lidar experiments using a sub-petawatt laser system, and characterized the supercontinuum emission. The data support that as much as 1 J of supercontinuum is generated in the atmosphere, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 30%. Due to the initial high beam intensity, resulting in the saturation of the filament number, the photon bath strongly contributes to the white-light generation, which is found to occur at altitudes below 100 m. This finding is well reproduced by numerical simulations based on the experimental parameters.
