AbstractEstudam-se as ondas transientes intermediarias. Através de correlações espaciais da componente meridional de vento, observa-se que essas ondas sempre se deslocam para leste. O comprimento de onda zonal no nível de 250 mb e nas latitudes medias e de 4000 Km no inverno e de 4600 Km no verão. Os comprimentos de ondas zonais médios, obtidos através de uma análise espectral cruzada estão em torno de 5000 Km. Esta analise também foi utilizada no calculo das velocidades de fase zonal e meridional. Os valores obtidos para a velocidade de fase zonal estão entre 6 e 8 m s-1. As velocidades de fase meridionais são para o norte e, combinando essa direção com aquela obtida para a velocidade de fase zonal que e para leste, obtém-se uma inclinação NW-SE para os eixos das cristas e cavados. As velocidades de grupo estimados do diagrama de Hovmoller são consistentes com aquelas calculadas com o auxilio da teoria de Rossby. ABSTRACT: Intermediate range transient waves are studied. Spatial, correlations of the meridional wind component show that the waves always propagate eastward. At 250 rob, the waves have a zonal wavelength, at middle latitudes, of 4000 km in winter and of 4600 km in summer. A cross spectrum analysis Was also performed, yielding averaged zonal wavelengths of about 5000 km and zonal phase velocities of 6-8 m s-1. Meridional phase velocities are Northwards, which, combined with eastward phase velocities imply a NW-SE tilt to the trough and ridge axes. Group velocities, estimated from Hovmoller diagrams, compare well with those computed through Rossby's theory.
