ResumoWithin the Amazon Basin lies not only the floodplains of the Amazon River, with highly biodiverse and productive ecosystems and a wealth of natural resources, but also a large and diverse human population. Human activities and their impact in the Amazon have been expanding and intensifying for several decades, while the region has undergone an extensive structural transformation. The land-use and land cover changes induced by deforestation, agriculture, and urban and infrastructural expansion have social and economic implications for the local population. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to explore how measures of human well-being correlate with land use, land cover and other economic and demographic characteristics of 93 municipalities bordering the Lower Amazon-Solimões River, which crosses the states of Amazonas and Pará. Methods included the collection of secondary data from multiple sources, mapping, and the Pearsons correlation coefficient test. Sources of data included the Human Development Index (HDI), the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), and the National Institute of Space Research (INPE). Our secondary objective was to generate ideas for further consideration and future research directions that can expand the body of knowledge regarding the floodplain population and the relationship between their environment, land use, land cover, and well-being. The results illustrate the considerable diversity among the municipalities and between the two states of Amazonas and Pará, as well as the strong relationship between the HDI and other indicators of objective well-being for both states, suggesting that the municipal HDI is useful as a general indicator of objective well-being. However, the results also generate more questions than answers about: the mechanisms through which agriculture, deforestation, floodplain area and urban area impact well-being; how these impacts differ between floodplain and upland, and urban and rural residents; and how the populations quality of life is experienced subjectively.
