ABSTRACT: The effective cloud cover coefficient (Ceff) is one of main climate data for evaluating solar energy resources in most radiative transfer models, especially for the model BRAZIL SR. This coefficient is obtained from satellite imagery, and contains information about the amount of clouds and their optical thickness. To obtain Ceff in BRAZIL SR model, are compared a satellite image in the visible channel with two composite images: an image of clear sky and overcast sky from another image. The composition of the image of maximum cloud cover is obtained through the pixels with high values of visible radiance measured by the satellite. In Brazil, some regions have a completely cloudless sky or partly cloudy for an entire month, making the complex task of composing an image of maximum cloud cover. Thus, the calculated Ceff becomes unrealistic and overrated, this is, the obtained Ceff indicate greater coverage than is the case in reality. The methodology for obtaining the maximum file visible radiance, proposed here, runs throughout the area of interest of the satellite image GOES12 seeking the maximum radiance of each position within the same solar zenith angle and the same geometrical configuration Sun-Pixel-Satellite during a quarter. The first test covers the months of February, March and April that match a rainy season in Pertolina-PE, Northeast of Brazil. With this method we obtained a final file with the values of maximum radiance as a reference to calculate Ceff. The file was composed of visible radiance values for each Zenith Angle over the geometry values Sol-Pixel-Satellite. The values for each visible Zenith Angle were adjusted to a curve in order to obtain more homogeneity in the data used and improve the results in the calculation of cloud cover. The validation of the methodology is performed by comparing estimates of solar irradiance provided by BRAZIL SR model with data collected at the station SONDA operations in Petrolina. |
