| Abstract | The recent technological advances in geospatial data collection have created massive data sets with better spatial and temporal resolution than ever. To properly deal with these data sets, geographical information systems (GIS) must evolve to represent, access, analyze and visualize big spatiotemporal data in an effi cient and integrated way. In this paper, we highlight challenges in temporal GIS development and present a proposal to overcome one of them: how to access spatiotemporal data sets from distinct kinds of data sources. Our approach uses Semantic Web techniques and is based on a data model that takes observations as basic units to represent spatiotemporal information from diff erent application domains. We defi ne a RDF vocabulary for describing data sources that store or provide spatiotemporal observations. RESUMO: O recente avanço tecnológico na coleta de dados espaciais tem gerado grandes volumes de dados com melhores resoluções espaciais e temporais. Para manipular esses dados devidamente, os Sistemas de Informações Geográfi cas (SIGs) devem evoluir para representar, acessar, analisar e visualizar grandes bases de dados espaço-temporais de maneira efi ciente e integrada. Neste artigo, nós enfatizamos os desafi os relacionados ao desenvolvimento de SIGs temporais e apresentamos uma proposta para superar um deles: como acessar informações espaço-temporais de diferentes tipos de fontes de dados. Nossa abordagem usa técnicas de Semântica Web e é baseada em um modelo que usa observações como unidades básicas para representar informações espaço-temporais de diferentes domínios de aplicação. Nós defi nimos um vocabulário RDF para descrever fontes de dados que armazenam ou fornecem observações espaço-temporais. | |||
