Abstract | This work is based on measurements of ionospheric absorption using extraterrestrial radio waves at CNAE in São José dos Campos since 1963. It opens with a brief discussion of the theory of ionospheric absorption, followed by a description of the basic principies involved in the technique, where the methods of plotting the correct quiet day curve are analyzed. It is concluded that it is better to derive this curve for solar maximura as well as solar minimum because some drift occurs in the riometer equipment. Some characteristics of the diurnal and seasonal behaviour of the ionospheric absorption and the changes with the solar cycle are obtained. Relative to these characteristics the mos t important is concerned to the secondary peak of absorption at about 21:00 LT that appears-mainly in the equinoctial and winter months near to maximum solar activity. This phenomenon hás been observed by other workers in several places at different latitudes and só a correlation was attempted with the electron density and electron temperature obtained at Jicamarca, Peru. It is concluded that the secondary maximum in absorption is due to the maintenance of the electron density and the decreasing of the electron temperature during the post-sunset period. |
