AbstractA short review of the source and propagation characteristics of atmospherics is given. Basic concepts of mode theory of wave propagation are presented and the single-station and multi-station techniques used by earlier workers to study the propagation of atmospherics are discussed. Using the single-station technique the distances to origin and amplitude spectra of atmospherics are determined. It was observed that the amplitudes of nighttime spectra are always greater than the amplitudes of daytime spectra. There is a tendency for the peak frequency of atmospherics to vary with distance during the day and night. The results indicate that there is probably an energy maximum in the ELF band bayond the maximum observed in the V.L.F. band. RESUMO: Uma breve revisão das características de origem e propagação de ruídos é dado. Conceitos básicos da teoria do modo de propagação da onda são apresentados e as técnicas de estação única e multi-estação utilizados pelos trabalhadores anteriores para estudar a propagação de ruídos são discutidos. Usando a única-técnica estação as distâncias à origem e espectros de amplitude estática são determinados. Observou-se que as amplitudes dos espectros noite são sempre maiores do que as amplitudes dos espectros diurna. Há uma tendência para que o pico de frequência de atmosferas para variar com a distância durante o dia e à noite. Os resultados indicam que há provavelmente um máximo de energia na banda ELF bayond máxima observada no VLF banda.
