ABSTRACT: The monitoring of active fire using by satellites can be an important subsidy for the definition of strategies to combat and prevent fires, as well as for the evaluation of ecological, economic and social damages. In Brazil the knowledge about the spatial and temporal evolution of active fire is still limited, so this study aims to describe the spatial and temporal distribution of active fire and to determine the hotspost cities of active fire in the State of Minas Gerais (MG). In addition, we studied the correlation between active fire and precipitation. We used 15 (2003-2017) years of data from Earth Observation System (AQUA) satellite. In the State of Minas Gerais, the average annual of active fire are approximately 11,421. These events are more frequent between the months of July to October, with a monthly maximum in September (3,700 actives fire). The highest concentration of active fire occurs in the north and northwest sectors of the State. On the other hand, the majority of hotspots cities are located in the northwest of the State, with the Paracatu city having the highest frequency, with 3,376 actives fire during the study period, that is, about 50 % more than the city that was in tenth place. The analysis of interannual and monthly correlation showed a negative correlation between precipitation and active fire, that is, dryer years have a higher frequency of active fire. The highest Pearsons correlation coefficient (-0.52) was obtained for a monthly time lag of 2 months, that is, although winter is the driest season of the year, the peak of active fire occurs between September and October. Therefore, the persistence of a dry soil for about 60 days before provides favorable conditions for the occurrence of fires, either naturally or anthropically. |
