AbstractSão diversas as funções da cobertura vegetal em áreas urbanas, expressas na melhoria da qualidade ambiental e na promoção de espaços agradáveis para o lazer da população. Apesar de seus benefícios, a cobertura vegetal vem sendo constantemente fragmentada pela expansão urbana e adensamento populacional. Estudos mostram que a cobertura vegetal urbana é diversificada em termos de funções e lugares em que se localiza, havendo uma diferenciação entre regiões centrais e periféricas. Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar a diversidade da cobertura vegetal urbana de Natal/RN a partir de quatro bairros, dois centrais e dois periféricos. A metodologia envolveu segmentação e classificação de imagens para obter polígonos de cobertura vegetal nos quatro bairros, para os quais foi calculada a área e identificada sua tipologia. Nos bairros periféricos Pajuçara e Pitimbu foram identificadas doze classes, dentre as quais sete foram classificadas como cobertura vegetal natural. Nos bairros centrais Cidade Alta e Petrópolis foram identificadas cinco classes, dentre as quais apenas dois tipos de cobertura vegetal natural. A classe natural mais expressiva foi Vegetação com Influência Marinha e a classe antropizada mais expressiva foi a Vegetação Privada. Quando comparadas a cobertura vegetal dos bairros centrais com a dos bairros periféricos, percebeu-se que nos bairros periféricos a diversidade de classes de cobertura vegetal é maior, bem como a quantidade de cobertura vegetal, indicando que a cidade de Natal deve seguir o mesmo padrão observado para a maioria das cidades onde levantamentos semelhantes foram realizados. ABSTRACT: The functions of vegetation cover in urban areas are diverse, improving the environmental quality and promoting pleasant leisure spaces for the population. Despite its benefits, vegetation cover has been constantly fragmented by urban expansion and population density. Studies show that this urban vegetation cover is diversified in terms of functions and places where it is inserted, with differentiation between central and peripheral regions. This research aims to analyze the diversity of urban vegetation cover in Natal/RN from four districts, two central and two peripheral. The methodology involved image segmentation and classification to obtain vegetation cover polygons in the four districts, for which the area was calculated and its typology identified. In the peripheral districts of Pajuçara and Pitimbu, twelve classes were identified, of which seven were classified as natural vegetation cover. In the central districts of Cidade Alta and Petrópolis, five classes were identified, of which only two class of natural vegetation cover. The most expressive natural class was Vegetation with Marine Influence and the anthropized class was Private Vegetation. When comparing the vegetation cover of the central districts with that of the peripheral districts, it was noticed that in the peripheral districts the diversity of vegetation cover classes is greater, as well as the amount of vegetation cover, indicating that the city of Natal should follow the same pattern observed for most cities where similar surveys were carried out.
