Abstract | Agriculture is fundamental for food, fiber and energy security but has become a major driver for environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, and climate change. Addressing these challenges typically involves complex trade-offs among stakeholders and sustainability concerns that may vary by country and across sectors. Thus, it is critical to develop transparent and measurable targets and associated tools, to inform actions towards sustainable agriculture. A transdisciplinary collaboration, jointly led by University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science and Oxfam, was initiated in 2017 and developed the Sustainable Agriculture Matrix (SAM), a framework for evaluating the impacts of agricultural production on sustainability along environmental, economic, and social dimensions. The first edition of SAM indicators was published in 2021, providing quantitative assessment for over 150 countries and revealing divergent priorities among them. Building on this effort, we established a SAM consortium of diverse partners from public and private sectors in six countries and regions (USA, Austria, Brazil, Turkey, South Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa). Supported by the Belmont Forum, the consortium co-develops country cases with stakeholders based on the initial SAM assessment, identifies policy, programmatic, and technological strategies for improving agricultural sustainability in the country, and recommends options for improving the indicator system and associated tools. So far, we have conducted 10 stakeholder workshops in 6 countries, involving 157 stakeholders from a wide range of sectors, backgrounds, interests, and nationalities. More workshops are scheduled in coming months. We worked to ensure that the stakeholder engagement process was inclusive and representative of the food system. Initial analysis has provided promising results for using SAM as a tool to assess and enhance accountability for sustainable agriculture, and to engage stakeholders. We will iteratively refine the design of the indicators and associated analytical tools based on stakeholders recommendations and requirements. We are also developing an interactive web platform to communicate SAM to a wider audience and demonstrate the tradeoffs and synergies between SAM and the Sustainable Development Goals. |
