ABSTRACT: This work intends to evaluate the continental water balance in South America simulated by the Noah-MP and CLSM surface models coupled to the HyMAP flow model. To fulfill such objective, streamflow and terrestrial water storage (TWS) simulations were evaluated against observed datasets using three (3) statistical tests as follows: the root mean square error (RMSE), the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (NS) and the Kling-Gupta (KGE) coefficient. More specifically, daily streamflow observations maintained by the Ground Runoff Data Center (GRDC) and monthly TWS estimates derived from the NASA's Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission were used as reference. The results indicate that the water balance simulations have a good representation over large South American river basins, in particular, in the Parnaíba River basin. Regarding the streamflow simulations, there is a greater difficulty in representing the stations in South America, with the best performance found in the Amazon region. The results presented in this paper will serve as benchmark for the second phase of the South America Land Data Assimilation System (SALDAS-2). |
